Childhood Obesity - ::RxOcean:: Promoting Health and Nutrition

Childhood Obesity

Nutrition is an input to and foundation for healthy individual and society. Better nutrition means stronger immune systems, less illness and better health whereas under-nourished children are more likely to catch common infections.

Healthy children also learn better thus showing better performance both in academics as well as sports in the school. Healthy people are stronger, are more productive. Corporates all around the world have realized the fact that healthy employees would be more productive as a result Gyms and Yoga centers have sprung across the corporate campuses.

Our ambition at RxOcean is to improve quality of life through better nutrition. Latest WHO projections indicate that at least one in three of the world’s adult population is overweight and almost one in 10 is obese. Additionally there are over 20 million children under age five who are overweight.

Being overweight or obese can have a serious impact on health. Carrying extra fat leads to serious health consequences such as cardiovascular disease (mainly heart disease and stroke), type 2 diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders like osteoarthritis, and some cancers (endometrial, breast and colon). These conditions cause premature death and substantial disability.

What is not widely known is that the risk of health problems starts when someone is only very slightly overweight, and that the likelihood of problems increases as someone becomes more and more overweight. Many of these conditions cause long-term suffering for individuals and families. In addition, the costs for the health care system can be extremely high.

Obesity in Indian Children

Changing lifestyle with too much junk food consumption and too little physical activity has started taking toll on children in India. Burger, pizzas, noodles, ice cream and too much are a fad for children.
Ultimately adults in the family would have to change their diet so that children in the family can follow healthy eating habits. It would be unwise to expect children in the family follow a nutritive diet and exercise regularly when all the adults in the family are couch potatoes and depend on quick fix meals. Children should also be motivated to move out in the open playgrounds to do play games requiring some physical activity rather than sit in front of TV or play video games at home.

Latest findings suggest that there has been drastic increase in the percentage of childhood obesity. A large percentage of these obese and overweight kids are likely to develop Syndrome X, that is a precursor to diabetes.

Obesity is also a major cause for other problems. Nearly 50%-70% of the children will become obese adults and would suffer from diabetes, stroke, liver diseases, infertility, hypertension, arthritis and cancer. These children who have been found to be obese, also have a high risk of development of early heart diseases. Obesity can also effect child’s behavior as children nowadays have become more conscious of their body and physical appearance and obesity might make children withdraw from the outside world thus compounding the behavior traits that led to the problem initially.
